Low C9 hydrocarbon resins are used in many applications. They are rarely used alone. Rather, they are often combined with other materials to achieve special properties.
These special features may be used to classify such resins:
Hard resins, mainly in the paint and varnish industry.
– Plasticizers (softeners) and compounding agents, in the plastic industry (rubber and PVC compounds)
– Bonding resins (with the ability to connect and stick) in adhesives.
Stabilizing agents in wood protection
– Water repellent in various types of applications
Hydrocarbon resins (C9 resins)
C9 hydrocarbon resins are made of low calor. Their composition depends on the hydrocarbon raw materials (coal tar, crude oil). The most important basic monomers are: Indene, methinedenes, dicyclopentadiene, styrene, alpha-methylstyrene and various vinyltoluenes (see below). These resins are available in a wide range of softening points. Compared to C5 resins, they have a much higher melt viscosity, are darker in color (dark yellow to brown) 2 and have a higher softening point of about 100-150°C. C9 resins are very versatile resins that are compatible with many
C5/C9 hydrogenated resins and resin compounds are also commercially available. These resins are often colorless and have improved heat and color stability. However, they are significantly more expensive and therefore should only be used if color and heat stability is a concern.
